CBD for Antibiotic Resistance: A New Tool in Fighting Multi-Resistant Infections

CBD for antibiotic resistance may be the very solution many people need.  Multi-resistant infections are very common.  Unfortunately, they are becoming even more common.  This is due to people commonly misusing antibiotics.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), antibiotic resistance is currently one of the most urgent matters of public health. That being said, new research on CBD for antibiotic resistance indicates that cannabinoids could play a vital role in combating multi-resistant infections.

The CDC reports that misuse of antibiotics is all too common.  Not only do people use antibiotics to treat infections against which they provide no defense, they use them so frequently that scores resistant bacteria accumulates over time.  While many people use antibiotics to treat a variety of conditions like bronchitis, common cold, flu, many sore throats, and a variety of earn and sinus infections, the CDC suggests antibiotics are not effective in treating these types of infections.

Aside from that, when a person actually benefits from use of antibiotics, they experience a lingering, potentially negative effect.  Each time antibiotics successfully battle unhealthy bacteria, a group of the same bacteria survives and becomes resistant to that antibiotic.

In research investigating CBD for antibiotic resistance, scientists performed tests that revealed CBD has bactericidal properties.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information published a study regarding CBD for antibiotic resistance. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1085130)

In this research, scientists discovered that even a miniscule amount of 1-5 mug/ml of CBD are effective in treating multi resistant staphylococci and streptococci.  However, scientists also noted that gram-negative bacteria (meningitis, pneumonia, etc) are also resistant to both CBD and THC.  Nevertheless, millions may benefit from more research on CBD for antibiotic resistance on a variety of infections requiring muliti-resistant infections CBD treatment could benefit.

Other researchers investigating CBD for antibiotic resistance realize that they need to conduct even more research on the endocannabinoid systems involvement with various antibacterial pharmacophore sites located in the body.

A science research team in Italy conducted a study concerning CBD for antibiotic resistance.  (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18681481)

In this study, they discovered that CBD triggers healthy production of olivetolic acid.  Consequently, this action causes the body to create a variety of lipid binding proteins that help to naturally combat infections.  They did note, however, that – while they had success, the antibacterial effect was minimal.  Notwithstanding, more research on CBD and antibiotic resistance and the endocannabinoid system in general is definitely warranted.
