Is CBD oil good for insomnia?

The topic of CBD for insomnia has been getting a lot of attention from endocannabinoid professionals.  Some have posed the question of CBD or THC for insomnia.  Others have simply focused on scientifically proving that CBD oil for insomnia and other sleep disorders works.

How is CBD for insomnia effective?

Through a variety of studies which we will be reviewing here, scientists have proven that CBD for insomnia works in a variety of ways.  Like many conditions hempuralists treat with CBD, it all boils down to modulation of the endocannabinoid system.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, insomnia is a condition that affects about 30% of the population.  Furthermore, around 10% show signs of physical and mental impairment due to lack of sleep.  With this in mind, it’s no wonder that scientists have dedicated so many resources to learning more about the benefits of CBD for insomnia.  Especially considering that driving without a sufficient amount of sleep is said to be worse than driving under the influence of alcohol.  That’s also according to the Sleep Foundation in a post related to insomnia and drowsy driving.

In this study, they split rats into four groups.  They treated one group with regular treatments of 2.5 mg of CBD.  Meanwhile, they treated the second group with 10 mg of CBD.  They treated the third group of rats with 40 mg of CBD.  Finally, they treated the fourth group of rats with a placebo.  They compared the sleep cycles of all four groups.  The groups of rats receiving 10 and 40 mg of CBD experienced a higher percentage of sleep than the other groups.  Interestingly, the group of rats receiving 40 mg of CBD therapy increased sleep latency at the rate of 40 mg.  Conversely, at the rate of 10 mg of CBD oil for insomnia, sleep latency decreased significantly.  Scientists concluded that higher levels of CBD helped to treat insomnia.  Additionally, it helped to increase sleep latency.

CBD for insomnia not only works to relieve insomnia, it also helps to regulate sleep to healthy levels.  This helps to prevent the opposite of insomnia, somnolence.

In this study, lab technicians used lower levels of CBD to treat somnolence in rats.  Like the scientists in Brazil who realized that lower levels of CBD actually decreased sleep latency, these researchers reported that the lower levels of CBD resulted in more profound wakefulness.  According to the National Sleep Foundation on excessive wakefulness, somnolence can be just as distracting and dangerous as insomnia.  For this reason, it still qualifies as a serious sleep disorder CBD can treat.

They focused on modulation of the endocannabinoid system.  More specifically, they tested neuron activity to monitor up-states and down-states.  They noted that CBD for insomnia worked by regulating neurological activity that controls sleep patterns.  Similar to scientists in the previous studies, these medical researchers proved that CBD helps to improve sleep and increase sleep time, thus resulting in more healthy wakefulness.

Scientists believe that a specific protein they call monoacyglycerol lipase and an enzyme they call fatty acid amide hydrolase increase sensory input and postpone healthy states of REM during sleep.  In this study, experts focused on using CBD oil for insomnia specifically to inhibit the production of these culprits.  It worked.

The benefit of CBD for insomnia isn’t limited to adults.  As a matter of fact, studies show that CBD oil for children helps to reduce anxiety associated with PTSD and other conditions, thus resulting in better sleep.

Actually, this was a study on CBD oil for children.  More specifically, it was for children who suffer from anxiety and insomnia as a result of PTSD.  As a result of this study, scientists learned that CBD for children is not only safe, it also helps to reduce anxiety and regulate sleep patterns.

CBD or THC for insomnia?

In this study, scientists learned that combining CBD with THC helps to regulate sleep, as well.  THC works as a sedative.  Meanwhile, an equal amount of CBD helps to minimize ‘intoxication’ and increase alertness during periods of wakefulness.

Aside from studies on CBD for insomnia, other professionals recognize that CBD therapy could be highly effective for treating insomnia and other sleep disorders.

A group of authors in Palo Alto took the time to review even more literature related to CBD and sleep disorders.  They produced a piece related to CBD for insomnia, highlighting that various aspects of CBD treatment that have been documented indicate that non-psychoactive cannabinoids could be an effective treatment for insomnia.

Conclusion on CBD oil for insomnia

There is still much to learn about different levels of CBD and how they work to regulate sleep patterns.  It’s important for those with sleep disorders to understand, too, that therapy doesn’t have to limited to CBD.  THC is as effective for certain symptoms and conditions and CBD and serves a host of different purposes.  Although, for those who are uncomfortable with the psychoactive properties of THC, it’s definitely not required to regulate sleep patterns if you are relying on systematic treatments of CBD for insomnia.
