Scientists are conducting a variety of studies concerning CBD for stroke victims. According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Professionals estimate that almost 800,000 people have a new or recurring stroke every year. When a person suffers from a stroke, it’s because something has prevented blood flow to an area of their brain. A variety of different factors can cause a stroke. A blood clot, otherwise referred to as an ischemia, can cause a stroke. Also, a hemorrhage can lead to a stroke. For example, an aneurism or weakened blood vessel can cause internal bleeding, thus resulting in a stroke.
CBD for stroke victims works to reduce symptoms of brain damage. Additionally, CBD helps to induce more complete functional recovery.

In this study, scientists separated Wistar rats into two groups. In both groups of rats, scientists induced an arterial ischemic stroke. The medical research team treated one group of rats with CBD. However, they left the other group of rats untreated as a control. When they compared the brain tissue a month later, they noted that rats who had received CBD therapy for stroke displayed fewer signs of brain damage. Furthermore, the CBD group of rats had more healthy brain cells than the control group who had not received cannabinoid treatment.

More specifically, scientists tested the efficacy of CBD on reversing brain-damaging effects of hypoxia-ischemia. This is a condition that causes a limited supply of blood and oxygen to get to an infant’s brain during the birthing process. More often than not, infants who suffer from hypoxia-ischemia also suffer long-term consequences.
Researchers in this study induced hypoxia-ischemia in newborn mice and treated them with CBD. They, then, compared their brain tissue to mice who had not received CBD treatment. They realized that mice who had received CBD had significantly less neurological damage. Furthermore, mice who were treated with CBD displayed healthy brain functionality, thus indicating they had escaped the long-term effects of brain damage.

In this study, scientists used bilateral common carotid artery occlusion to induce ischemia in mice. They treated one group of mice with CBD. Conversely, they left the other group as a control group without any treatments. When lab technicians performed tests on the mice, they realized that CBD had successfully protected most of the cells in the hippocampal region, thus reducing both short-term and long-term cognitive impairment.
As scientists are learning by conducting research on other diseases CBD helps, they also learn how the neuro-protective properties of CBD assist in preserving brain cells during a stroke. As scientists perform more studies on CBD for stroke victims, they can learn even more about not only reversing the effects of stroke, but preventing them altogether.
